Washington, D.C. – Next Thursday, February 6 through Saturday, February 8, The Barbara Jordan-Dolores Huerta YEO Women’s Leadership Program, part of the nonpartisan People For the American Way Foundation, will bring together a cohort of 21 women elected officials from around the country. This three-day gathering will focus on addressing the challenges of public office, fostering professional growth, and amplifying women’s leadership within the national progressive movement, empowering them to pursue higher office and inspire greater representation in political leadership nationwide.

The percentage of women holding elected positions has grown significantly over the past decade. However, despite notable gains in improving the overall representation of women in America’s political institutions, some numbers have decreased. For instance, the number of women in the 119th Congress decreased to 150, down from the previous session, and the percentage of statewide elected positions held by women dropped from 32.3 percent to 31 percent.

“We are proud to gather with such a phenomenal group of women for this year’s Jordan-Huerta YEO Women’s Leadership Program,” said People For the American Way Foundation Vice President of Campaigns and Programs Raquel Jones. “Investing in the leadership of women elected officials of different backgrounds empowers this next generation of leaders, educates communities across the U.S. about the needs and priorities of women in America, and supports the evolution of their political power.”
“Elevating women's voices and unique perspectives ensures that policies and decisions at the local, state and federal levels reflect the needs of society,” said People For the American Way Foundation President Svante Myrick. “This cohort of women in the Jordan-Huerta YEO Women’s Leadership Program increases the visibility of women in leadership and encourages even more women to engage in politics while creating a pipeline for a future generation of women leaders.”

During this exclusive event, attendees will engage in policy and skills development, learning how to elevate their own voices and those of other women within the movement. Topics will include:

  • Deep dives into key issues including,  building safe and inclusive schools, protecting civil rights, immigration, and loss of government programming like WIC, environment, and identity politics.

  • Strategies for fundraising and campaign management

  • How to help position yourself for higher offices

  • Communications techniques for op-eds, interviews, and on-camera appearances

  • Tactics for leading in male-dominated spaces
